Upon opening up the box which recently came from Fox Creek Leather it was apparent, even before I took the coat out of the box, that the smell of the leather was extremely pleasant.  As a leather smith I have found an easy way for people to check the quality of leather, i.e. if it smells and feels good you’ll want to wear it! This was only the beginning!
The coat was heavier than the coats you’d generally find on a racket at any m/c apparel shop which was due to the supple thickness of the fine quality naked leather (my favorite all around leather).  The hides used for this jacket were consistent in the quality and grain so that I didn’t wind up with a coat that had several different kinds of grain and textures which seems to take away from the garment.
I immediately set out to check the seams for quality of construction.  What I found was that the stitch lines were straight and uniform and things like the zipper ends, top and bottom matched perfectly.  Leather has a mind of its own and can be tricky to sew unless the person knows how to handle it properly. The quality and placement of the zippers was excellent.  I found the pockets to be exactly where I needed them, deep and lined with a study fabric that won’t give out after years of wear. I particularly liked the inside pockets for when I run to the bank or post office and don’t want things “taking flight” out of my outside pockets. These pockets are very deep and can handle things like a check book….perfect!

When it came to putting the jacket on for the fit I found that the style was exactly what I was looking for.  The jacket fit me so comfortably that unlike the other jackets I have, there was no need for a “break in” period.  My observation is that this is due two to things, quality of leather and conscientious styling. Once I was able to find a warm enough day to give it a test run I found that warmth was a huge feature which I hadn’t thought about. The leather just meshed comfortably to me while I was riding and although this jacket was much heavier than my others, the quality of the leather lent itself to total comfort. The way the front of the jacket overlaps gave me added warmth on the cold day that I first tried it out.  My chest stayed very warm, wind didn’t tend to go down my neck and my arms also stayed warm, even with just a long sleeved top. The hide-a-way neck warmer was a really neat addition that works like a champ keeping wind out from behind my neck where I tend to truly have a cold spot. The temps that day were about 53 or less which didn’t include the wind chill factor.  I was toasty warm and comfortable…wow what a difference it made on my outlook to winter riding!

The style is a show stopper and I’ve had several of my friends ask to try it on.  It provides me with the elastic waist that not only looks great and adds comfort but doesn’t make me look chunky in the middle.  I don’t feel like I’m “fighting the fit”!  The jacket was designed with lines which accentuate your figure not add to it.  I have all the room where I need it the most; the chest, shoulders and hip areas. These are the spots that for me make a difference while I’m riding. The side zippers are wonderful; I particularly like them for when I have an extra layer on or when I need to pull the jacket further down around my hips while riding my bike.  The sleeve zippers are naturally great for putting on and taking off gloves.  I personally would like the sleeves to be a bit tighter in the cuff so that it makes it easier for me to pull my gauntlet gloves down over the sleeves, but that, is a matter of personal taste. I found the soft perforated leather on the inside of the sleeve zipper to be pretty neat as it would help to bring in just a bit more air on the warmer days when I would ride with my sleeves unzipped. The perforated leather panel is wider than most jackets which lends itself to making it easier to remove gloves or take the jacket off.

As for warmth, you can’t beat this particular jacket.  The full insulated liner is the best quality I’ve seen so far.  It’s pretty obvious that I’ve put aside my other two jackets for my new FCL one because I just know that I’ll be warm and comfortable while riding.

"These vests are excellent for use in hot weather and can actually save your life! " That's what the ads say and I'm here to tell you they are right. It most likely saved mine.

The wife and I picked up our new bike from sellers in extreme No. Calif. During the scorching hot summer of 2007. Dropping out of the nice cool air of the Sierra Nevada's into Reno, then head east across I-80 to Salt Lake City... it's a blast furnace. Well over 100 degrees and not a shade tree in site... no clouds for that matter either.

The instructions on the package are simple and if followed, the vest works wonderfully. Simply soak it in a sink for 20 min. (the first time, less time is required after that), ring it out a bit and either put it on or store it in the provided zip-loc bag for later use. If there is a weak point in this product system is't the zip-loc bag. Although heavy weight plastic, it will tear down the side. Be on the lookout for another water proof bag of some sort to replace the zip-loc. You'll need it.

My wife and I wore our vests under ballistic jackets. After being down once and having full leathers save our hides, we are not real comfortable riding without some protection. Even with all the mesh of the jacket, it still was an uncomfortably hot ride. So we broke out the hydration vests. We put them on over just a tee shirt, zipped them up and dawned the ballistic jackets. Putting these vests on, on a hot day is like being doused with a cool pitcher of water. Well, not as wet of course. You immediately feel the cooling action of evaporation.

There is a strange feeling within a few minutes. The vest seems to warm to your body temp. You might think is has stopped working. Quite the opposite. The water closest to you skin is warmed by your body head but that heat is then transferred away, evaporates quickly allowing you to stay cool. That's standing still. Get on the bike and the evaporation cooling goes into high gear. My, it feels nice.

If you are driving behind a full fairing, like we do, the air flow over your body is reduced and so is the cooling action. But it still keeps your body temp within reason. Infact, it was working so well and it was so hot on the desert, the vest would be bone dry in 50 minutes. Way faster than advertised but just fine considering the abnormal heat and 80 mph speeds.

There are several hydration vest designs out there. (here's some good information on the different types )This is one of the easiest for the end user to maintain. It's low tech, easy to use and reasonably priced. Taking up very little space in the bags, it's a permanent part of our summer riding gear inventory.
