“Leather Heaven”! Wow Leather Tanned in the US!

For the past eight years my only leather distributor has been the Hide House in Napa California. The reason behind this statement is their customer service and product knowledge; something a bit rare in society today. After planning a trip to the San Francisco Bay Area to visit a friend I planned the Hide House as my first stop.

I was not sure what to expect especially when I drove into a neighborhood!  A leather factory in a neighborhood? Towing my bike, I was lucky to find a parking space big enough to accommodate the length of both truck and trailer! Later I found out that years and years ago, there were NO houses there!

So after 8 years, I was finally going meet my two sales reps both of who sounded awesome over the phone; Roger Grageda, sales and Kim Huges, purchasing/sales.  I was also going to meet the President and CEO of the Hide House, Rob Deits.

It is amazing how our minds “make up” what a person looks like by listening to their voice. I walked in and a young gal asked if she could help me.  I simply stated that I was looking for Roger or Kim.  With that she replied “I am Kim”.  Speechless I found her staring at me and me at her.  It was classic!  Neither of us had figured that we would be brunettes and both of us had counted on the other girl being blonde!  What a laugh that was! I had an idea of what Roger looked like as I had seen his photo on line years ago, however I failed to check the website for a photo of Kim. We all broke into laughter and a few minutes later I was also greeted warmly by Rob Deits.

To me the warehouses smelled better than the best cookie or bread factory! So with introductions out of the way the tour of the facility started. I was immediately taken aback by the amount of leather stacked clear to the ceiling; 10’s of thousands of square feet.  It was overwhelming at first however after watching the guys in the warehouse and system used to ship out the hides I found it to be pretty amazing and organized to say the least.

In 1869 long before the wine industry was founded a sizable leather industry was established on the banks of the Napa River.  I found the history very interesting and the Hide House website has a great story about how it all was started. Interestingly enough I learned that although Hide House carries hides tanned out of the country many types of leather is still TANNED IN THE US! In fact I did not know that some of the hides which I have on my shelf were tanned in the US!  The best part is this, now if a customer requests leather tanned in the US, they’ll know that Ace High Leathers can make sure it happens! Made in the US, leather tanned in the US! There you have it outstanding customer service and leather tanned in the US….it cannot get much better than that!
